This song was loosely inspired by my grandparents. The perspective it's written from is that of someone talking to Katy about finding love in her own life. It depicts her grandfather and his deep love for her late grandmother. She is dealing with the conflict of taking risks for gain versus what is lost if she stays removed and distanced.
She knitted a blanket for him years before she died,
and he was always warm.
And even when she was gone he'd stay up every night
pretending she was home.
And every moment you saw they had left to lose
he told her: "Don't you worry, sweetest lady, I am yours for good."
If somebody'd offered up their heart to take that chance
wouldn't you oblige?
If something so pure and lovely longed for your advance,
would you breathe it life?
'Cause every moment you saw they had left to lose
he told her: "Don't you worry, sweetest lady, I am yours for good."
But you couldn't wait for the sound; running down like water,
opening your eyes to all that you'd been blind.
You couldn't wait for the sound, echoing her laughter
like all you'd left behind.
